Gabriel Berry designs costumes for theater, dance and opera. Specializing in collaboration on new work, her opera premieres include Philip Glass’s Appomattox for The San Francisco Opera, John Adams and Peter Sellars’ The Flowering Tree for the New Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna, Douglas Cuomo’s Arjuna’s Dilemma for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Osvaldo Golliov’s Ainadamar for The Santa Fe Opera, Josef Tal’s Josef for the New Israeli Opera directed by David Alden, Meredith Monk and Ann Hamilton’s Mercy for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Stewart Wallace and Michael Korie’s Harvey Milk for the Houston Grand Opera. Other notable opera productions include The Mother of Us All and The Glassblowers directed by Christopher Alden for Glimmerglass Opera and SFO, Zaide directed by Peter Sellars for the Vienna Festival and the Festival d’Aix en Provence, and the Stravinsky Bilblical Pieces directed by Peter Sellars for De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. Current projects include the world premiere of Richard Foreman’s Old Fashioned Prostitutes and Stew and Heidi’s new Musical The Total Bent for The New York Public Theater and La Perichole directed by Christopher Alden for New York City Opera.

Honors include an OBIE award for sustained achievement, a Bessie award for her dance designs, a Michael Merritt award for artist collaboration and a medal from the Prague Design Quadrennial for her contribution to experimental theater.
