Mårten Spångberg Epic

A bold choreographic mise-en-scène for nine dancers, Epic by Mårten Spångbergexplored the nature and artifice of format, materiality and attention. On this abstract landscape are superimposed alien existences and objects that in turn reveal transient phenomena.

Seven artists breathed life into the empty spaces of Mayfield Depot alongside the Massive Attack v Adam Curtis performances. Featuring Sehgal’s loose-limbed, generous artwork This variation, Spångberg’s psychedelic pop tribute Epic, and Ingvartsen’s inspirational Evaporated Landscapes, a sense of wonder ran through all the shows.

The daily-changing programme and improvised tea-room made this dusty concrete cathedral a surprisingly welcome place to be.

Commissioned by Manchester International Festival.
Commissioning partner for This Variation: dOCUMENTA (13).
